A significant seismic event, measuring 6.1 in magnitude, struck the Taiwan region, leading to noticeable shaking of buildings in Taipei, the nation’s capital.

The earthquake, which took place on Wednesday in the southeastern coastal county of Taitung, was officially announced by Taiwan’s weather administration. At the time of the initial reports, there were no immediate indications of damage.

The quake’s origin was approximately 11.9 kilometers below the surface, and its effects were felt across various parts of Taiwan, including Kaohsiung, with particularly strong jolts reported in the vicinity of the epicenter.

A separate measurement indicated a magnitude 6.0 tremor occurring near Taitung City at 09:47 UTC.

The intensity of the tremor was such that it caused items to fall from shelves in a supermarket located in the southeastern county. In related news, Taiwan’s major semiconductor manufacturer, TSMC, informed that the earthquake’s magnitude did not meet the criteria for initiating factory evacuations, according to information from Reuters.
